As some of you may know (from my signature and fevered writing whenever there is news) I have a soft spot for the SAGA rules system from Tomahawk Studios and Gripping Beast. Well, when I was in the middle of creating my Anglo-Danish warband modelled on the Starter Sets from Gripping Beast I glanced over to my collection of Dwarves on the shelf and wondered about how cool it would be using Lord of the Rings miniatures in the system of SAGA which is simple, innovative and uses that incredibly fun dice rolling mechanic for orders…
Well here is the fruit of my labours (ok, about half an hour flicking between GW and Gripping Beast). These are some interesting combination warbands you could make for SAGA using the existing ‘Starter Sets’ put out for quick gaming within the system. Obviously all of these are changeable to whatever force YOU like but I tried to make the Middle-Earth factions fit the right battle board. Let me know what you think…
Norman Starter Set – Isengard & Mordor
1 Warlord (Mounted) = Sharku (Mounted)
12 Archers = Mordor Orcs with Bows
8 Crossbowmen = Uruk-Hai with Crowssbows
8 Knights = Warg Riders
Welsh Starter Set – Elves of Mirkwood & Lorien
1 Warlord = Haldir
12 Archers = Wood Elf Warriors
8 Spearmen = Galadrim Warriors
8 Spearmen = Galadrim Warriors
4 Warriors = Guards of the Galadrim Cout
Viking Starter Set – Uruk-Hai
1 Warlord = Ugluk
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Uruk-Hai Ferals
4 Warriors (Berserkers) = Uruk-Hai Berserkers
8 Spearmen = Uruk-Hai Warriors
8 Spearmen = Uruk=Hai Warriors
Anglo-Danish Starter Set – Durin’s Folk
1 Warlord = Dain/Balin
4 Warriors (Dane Axe) = Khazad Guard
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Dwarf Warriors
8 Spearmen = Dwarf Rangers
8 Spearmen = Dwarf Rangers
Breton Starter Set – Rohan
1 Warlord = Theoden
4 Warriors (Mounted/Armoured) = Royal Guard
4 Warriors (Mounted/Armoured) = Royal Guard
8 Warriors (Mounted) = Riders of Rohan
12 Spearmen = Warriors of Rohan
Anglo-Saxon Starter Set – Minas Tirith
1 Warlord = Boromir (Armoured)
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Guards of the Fountain Court
8 Warriors = Warriors of Minas Tirith
8 Warriors = Warriors of Minas Tirith
12 Spearmen = Rangers of Middle-Earth
Scot Starter Set – Moria Goblins
1 Warlord = Goblin King of Moria
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Gundabad Blackshields
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Gundabad Blackshields
8 Spearmen = Moria Goblin Warriors
8 Spearmen = Moria Goblin Warriors
Jomsviking Starter Set – Dunlending
1 Warlord = Dunlending Warriors Command
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Dunlending Warriors with Two Handed Weapons
4 Warriors (Armoured) = Dunlending Warriors with Hand Weapon & Shield
8 Warriors = Uruk-Hai Scouts/Wildmen of Dunland
8 Warriors = Uruk-Hai Scouts/Wildmen of Dunland
Key:-
The Starter Set – Middle-Earth Equivalent
Number of Miniatures – Model from the Starter Set = Model/Miniature Set to Replace it from GW
So what do you guys think? SAGA is a pretty interesting system that rewards bloodthirsty play mixed with tactical decision making and clever use of your resources. It’s almost like a board game and a miniatures game combined. AND now it could be done in the world of Middle-Earth?
