Whilst waiting for various components of the desert island board to dry I started messing about with a few other scenery bits. Something I thought might be useful was a modular trench system, so I set about constructing a proof of concept:

This is just a standalone piece really, but I think I've got the idea and technique nailed and should be able to adapt it into something modular and scalable.
Looking good.
Take a look at Fat Franks stuff.
Fat Frank Trenches
Might give you some ideas.
Also have a look at the field fortifications
here.

Those look ace Si - feeling proper inspired now
Just trying to track down some large sheets of 2mm MDF to use for bases.
Making the most of a week off, and in between domestic duties, I've applied a basecoat and first drybrush to the concept. Base was some cheapo dark brown acrylic from The Works, and the first drybrush was Graveyard Earth... - sorry, "Steel Legion Drab".

Another final, lighter drybrush, and some parched static grass. That's pretty much it for this initial concept I think.

Loving the look of these, similar to something i attempted a while ago but yours look better!
What did you use for the sides? Styrofoam?
Cheers Vince - the banks are off-cuts of pink foam, and the wooden panels were assembled from matchsticks (bought a huge bag of them from Hobbycraft a while back). The banks and floor were then covered in ready-mixed filler, and finally coarse sand.
Should've taken some earlier shots, but just started off tinkering and wasn't sure how it would turn out.
The results are amazing, I would love to see a board of trenches!
