I just got the original red one, Gaz says the new blue one has upto date cards and rules for the expansions that have since come out. It doesn't make any difference but new one is more convenient with updated rules.

The ships in the blue starter have slightly different abilities but points always are adjusted to reflect, so it's a mute point.

The Force Awakens set is slightly more polished, and as Paul stated the additional rules such as boosts and bombs are included. However any model that has access to those rules, will get an rules card with it, (one assumes this will continues into the future.) So your free to pick really which models and pilots you prefer you use.
