would the reverse side of he green battlemat work? I think it's black (cant remember without looking)
Well we've just been using a board without a mat, I was thinking more for planets etc.
I have access to a half decent A3 colour printer at work. I can print flat terrain like planets. (or have I missed the point?

That could be good, I was more thinking of the airbrushed styrofoam ball variety such as http://cuddlybuddly.com/shop/b924-home-c...132-balls/
Possibly get some wine, drink, enjoy, keep the corks (avoid plastic ones,) break bits off, so your left with a vague asteroid shape, paint, stick in a flying stand, rinse and repeat, have some terrain.
For the Asteroids i made for my X-wing terrain, i just used off cuts of styrofoam, shaped them like asteroids and put some sand on. Then used some spare GW flying stands to put them on.
For planets, (which would be in scale for BFG i think) just paint up some Styrofoam balls-Styrofoam balls
If i had time, i would make some up for you but sadly time is at a premium for me at present. Sad
I have a load of Balls sat in my house to work on, as a result of a Hobbycraft Trip.

Or a t-shirt: "I went to Hobbycraft and all I got were these huge balls"
You buy it, I'll wear it.
